By 19th August 2022Press Releases

Vertigo Releasing is thrilled to announce the acquisition of CALL JANE for the UK and Ireland. CALL JANE is written by Hayley Schore and Roshan Sethi and directed by Phyllis Nagy (Academy Award® Nominee for Carol screenplay). Produced by Robbie Brenner, David Wulf and Kevin McKeon, the film stars three-time Emmy nominee Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games, Catch Me If You Can,  Man On A Ledge), and Academy Award® nominated and BAFTA and Golden Globe winning actress Sigourney Weaver (Alien, Working Girl, My Salinger Year) as well as Chris Messina (Palo Alto, Birds Of Prey, Sharp Objects) and Kate Mara (127 Hours, Brokeback Mountain, The Martian).  Call Jane premiered in Sundance and Berlin in 2022.

CALL JANE explores the true story of the “Janes,” an underground collective of women, who in Chicago during the 1960s, came together to secretly provide nearly 12,000 women and girls with safe and secure abortions. The story is told through the eyes of Joy (Elizabeth Banks), a suburban wife, and mother to a whip-smart teenage daughter. Joy’s happy life, filled with caring for her family and sharing confidences with her best friend, Lana (Kate Mara), is derailed when her much wanted pregnancy becomes life threatening.

CALL JANE is both a rousing historical film and very much a film for today, where the rights of women and their bodies continue to be warred over and negotiated by those in power.

Wahida Niblo, Vertigo Releasing’s Director of Publicity & Marketing said, “We are so delighted to be working with Director Phyllis Nagy on her film which vividly captures the sense of female empowerment and is very much a film which is relevant for today.”

Vertigo Releasing acquired the rights from Protagonist Pictures. Vertigo’s Edward Caffrey, and Protagonist’s George Hamilton, negotiated the deals. Vertigo plans to release CALL JANE  widely in cinemas from 4th November.

CALL JANE is an RB Entertainment Production and Redline Entertainment production, in association with Our Turn Productions, FirstGen Content and LB Entertainment.
