VERTIGO RELEASING ACQUIRES ALEEM KHAN’S AWARD WINNING FEATURE DEBUT AFTER LOVE FOR NORTH AMERICA
Vertigo Releasing is delighted to announce the acquisition of North American rights for Aleem Khan’s BAFTA and BIFA (British Independent Film Awards) winning film AFTER LOVE, starring Joanna Scanlan (The Thick of It, Getting On, No Offence, Pin Cushion). Scanlan recently won Best Actress at this year’s BAFTAs for her role in the film, and the film won a staggering six BIFAs back in December, including Best British Independent Film, Best Director and Best Actress. Vertigo Releasing is planning a Summer 2022 theatrical release.
AFTER LOVE tells the story of Mary Hussain (Scanlan), who suddenly finds herself a widow following the unexpected death of her husband. A day after the burial, she discovers he has a secret just twenty-one miles across the English Channel in Calais.
Writer-director Khan’s powerful feature debut was released in UK and Irish cinemas last Summer. The film was awarded the Cannes 2020 Critics’ Week label, followed by selection for Telluride 2020, TIFF Industry Selects and Rome Film Festival Official Selection. It had its UK premiere screening to much acclaim at the 2020 BFI London Film Festival.
The film’s producer, Matthieu de Braconier, said, “I’m delighted that, thanks to Vertigo Releasing, AFTER LOVE will be finding its home on US screens big and small”. Edward Caffrey of Vertigo Releasing added, “We’re so excited to be able to work with Aleem and the AFTER LOVE team on this unique and beautiful film. We’re looking forward to introducing North American audiences to such a distinctive new voice.”
AFTER LOVE is a production from The Bureau, written and directed by Aleem Khan and produced by Matthieu de Braconier. The film was developed by the BFI, BBC Film and initially by Creative England through BFI NETWORK and was further supported by the Sundance Institute Feature Film Program. It was supported through production by BBC Film and the BFI, using funds from the National Lottery. Vertigo Releasing negotiated the deal with The Bureau Sales, who is selling the film internationally.
