Vertigo Releasing Acquires Sundance Film Festival winner Girl Picture from LevelK
LevelK’s Finnish Sundance Film Festival winner, the sassy coming of age title Girl Picture, which just had its European premiere at Berlin Generation, has not only wowed the critics but also raised the interest of several distributors. Vertigo Releasing has acquired the UK and Irish rights, and other deals include the US (Strand Releasing), Canada (Photon Films) and Japan (Medallion Media). The film took home the Audience Award at this year’s Sundance FF in the World Cinema Dramatic section and had its European premiere at the Berlinale Generation Section. Next up it will be the Opening Night Gala at BFI Flare.
On the interest and sales of Girl Picture, Head of Sales at LevelK Debra Liang, says: “We’re absolutely thrilled Girl Picture will travel the world with our distribution partners. Having often been referred to as the Finnish Booksmart, Girl Picture is a refreshing, vibrant and heart-warming coming of age title that ultimately is a triumphant celebration of girlhood and female empowerment.”
This coming of age drama centres on Mimmi, Emma and Rönkkö, girls at the cusp of womanhood, trying to draw their own contours. In three consecutive Fridays two of them experience the earth moving effects of falling in love, while the third goes on a quest to find something she’s never experienced before: pleasure.
The film is directed by Alli Haapasalo (Love and Fury, Force of Habit), written by Daniela Hakulinen and Ilona Ahti, and produced by Leila Lyytikäinen (Life after Death, Other Girls) and Elina Pohjola for Citizen Jane Productions. Financed by Finnish Film foundation, Yle and Nordisk Film. The film will be distributed in the Nordics by Nordisk Film and is expected to premiere domestically 14th of April 2022 with LevelK handling international sales.
