Vertigo Releasing Picks Up UK Rights For Hannes Thor Halldórsson’s Cop Secret
After its World Premiere at last year’s Locarno Film Festival, and a UK Premiere at the BFI London Film Festival, Hannes Thor Halldórsson’s impressive feature debut Cop Secret, has been picked up by Vertigo Releasing. The deal was put through by the film’s sale agents, Brett Walker with Miguel Angel Govea of alief, and Ed Caffrey of Vertigo Releasing ahead of its Market Premiere screening at this year’s European Film Market.
Cop Secret caught early attention as it marks the directorial debut of Halldórsson – a professional soccer goalkeeper, best known for turning away a penalty kick by Lionel Messi in a 2018 soccer World Cup match between Iceland and Argentina.
Halldórsson’s action spoof garnered critical acclaim after its screenings in the Official Selection at Locarno, its US Premiere in Fantastic Fest, and its Asian debut at Busan Film Festival. It also won Best Debut Feature at Nordic Film Days Lübeck.
“We are thrilled to release Cop Secret in UK-IE with industry leaders Rupert Preston, Ed Caffrey and their innovative team at Vertigo,” says, Brett Walker, President, alief. “They are the perfect team for our genre bending spoof” added Miguel Angel Govea, Head of Production, Sales & Distribution at alief. Ed Caffrey, Head of Acquisitions and Business Development at Vertigo Releasing added, “We’re delighted to partner with alief on the wonderful Cop Secret. It’s got action, comedy and thrills, who could ask for more!”
With a tongue-in-cheek approach, Cop Secret recasts the buddy cop action genre in Iceland, where Bussi, a tough ‘Super Cop’, begins to lose his cool when he’s assigned a new partner – the suave, cultured and self-declaredly pan-sexual Hordur Bess – fighting an inner struggle while investigating a string of bank robberies where nothing seems to have been stolen.
Cop Secret stars Audunn Blöndal (The Garden), Egill Einarsson (Black’s Game), Steinunn Ólína Thorsteinsdóttir (The Garden), Vivian Ólafsdóttir (Echo), Sverrir Thór Sverrisson (A White, White Day), and Björn Hlynur Haraldsson, (Lamb, Netflix’s Eurovision Song Contest and The Witcher). The film is written by Nína Petersen, Sverrir Thór Sverrison, and Halldórsson and produced by Lilja Ósk Snorradóttir (Echo) for Iceland’s Pegasus Pictures, which has provided production services on Sky’s Fortitude and HBO’s Succession.
alief is handling world rights on the film, which has been sold to multiple territories. Spain’s Twelve Oaks Pictures, and Germany’s MFA + are planning wide theatrical release this summer.
Cop Secret will be released in the UK and Ireland by Vertigo Releasing this Summer.
